Chapter 10

THE STORY SO FAR

Over the next few days I pore over the transcripts, the recordings, the old case file. I know that there is something, one tiny thing, that will help me unravel the mystery and point to Cain. I’m now convinced that he is the real murderer. Despite still being fixated on the case, I’m actually enjoying the break from the studio. The weather is beautiful and I’m taking long walks on the beach, always thinking about Jonah and the murder, of course. Charlie had accused me of being too emotional, and as I walk I think about whether that’s true. I’m certainly passionate – I believe in justice. But am I too emotionally invested in this case? Is this about me trying to right some wrongs?

On Wednesday I tune into the station. I’m interested to see what Sarah and Charlie will have put together for the show.

‘Hi, this is Sarah Sutton and I’m filling in for our usual host, Amy Rhinehart, as she takes a well-deserved break this week. You’re listening to Strange Crime, a live broadcast and podcast on Radio Western every Wednesday at 5 p.m. Season One is called Double Lives and examines the Jonah Scott murder of Casey Williams. This is Episode Five, “The Story So Far”, where I’m going to take you back and recap what we know. Don’t forget to check out the additional notes and information we upload weekly at Strange Crime Double Lives dot com.

‘Jonah Scott sits in a prison cell in a maximum security prison for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Casey Williams. He confessed and he pleaded guilty. The question this poses is, why? We listened to the investigating officer, Detective Tompkins, tell us that there was an actual defence for the crime committed by Jonah: “the transsexual advance defence” – this would have meant that only one juror needed to believe it and Jonah wouldn’t have been convicted for murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. I’m taking your calls, or drop me a line and tell me your thoughts about Jonah refusing his right to trial.’

Having callers live on air is always a risky move, even when Charlie vets them first. Sometimes what callers initially say they want to mention turns out to be vastly different. I hope Sarah is able to think quickly on her feet.

‘Welcome back. I’ve got Ted on the line. What are you thinking about Jonah’s decision not to defend himself?’

‘The boy’s a bloody moron,’ Ted says. ‘Why would you not try and get off, even if you did it? It’s all them video games and too much television. Everyone wants to be a superhero –’

Sarah cuts in.

‘Thanks, Ted. We just need to hear from Carol now. Hey, Carol, what do you think?’

‘The boy should be locked up for life. I mean, seriously, when does life mean twenty-odd years? That’s just twenty-odd years. He should live there until he dies. What he did to that poor girl, boy, whatever –’

Sarah jumps in again quickly.
